About us

The martial art taught at Takayama dojo is Shinken bujutsu. Our philosophy is embedded in the name of our school. "Shinken is literally translated as “true sword” but it implies a serious and honest reality. To become skilled at anything requires an honest effort grounded in reality; a correct balance must be obtained between form and function. While many factors are involved in the development of a martial artist, the quality of the system is the foundation. The school itself must be led with the same notion of sincerity and pursuit of truth, with the intention of teaching only what has been deemed to be effective. It is only in this way that any school can truly promote the growth of its students.
The term Bujutsu is used because our school is not limited to any one style. Shinken Bujutsu includes various warrior arts including but not limited to Jujustu, Koppo Karate, Kenjutsu, Bojutsu, and Tantojutsu. But the principle of reality always remains the backbone of the school and regardless of what method is being practiced, we always stay true to that conviction.

"The mission of the Shinken Bujutsu School is to assist in the advancement of all aspects of the martial arts. While combat is a significant component of our instruction, we also focus on personal growth and refinement of the individual. What is taught at the Dojo is much more than just fighting skills it is also a mental discipline with its ultimate goal being to develop a dynamic equilibrium both in martial art technique and in all other aspects of life."
